Background
AI and Public Science is a one-day collaborative workshop for researchers of all disciplines and career stages which aims to collectively examine the epistemic, methodological, and political-economic implications of AI integration in scientific practice. There will be two keynotes by scholar-practitioners working on the topic, and structured deliberations among a small interdisciplinary audience consisting of ENGAGE.EU scholars and experts from academia and beyond.
This initiative is supported by the ENGAGE.EU Alliance, which brings together 10 European universities. Selected within the Research Label seed funding call #03, it is led by researchers from Tilburg University, LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome, Toulouse Capitole University, University of St. Gallen, University of Mannheim, and Ramon Llull University.
Objectives
The AI and Public Science collaborative workshop aims to gather input on a mid-stage position paper on AI, scientific discovery, and epistemic democracy by:
- Surfacing implicit disciplinary tensions,
- Identifying theoretical gaps, and
- Producing a documented revision agenda based on the inputs received

Application

Application materials:
- A short motivation letter (500 words max) sharing your research topic or focus area, why you would like to join and what you expect to contribute to the workshop,
- A short CV/resume (2 pages max)
Applicants will be notified of admission status by 30 September, 2026. Admitted participants will receive detailed information about venue logistics, accommodation options, travel arrangements, and pre-workshop preparatory materials.
Participant selection
Spots are limited to 10 participants. The selection will be based on the following criteria:
- Research fit and motivation: We will assess applications based on a clear articulation of how researchers think they can contribute to the workshop based on their own topic or focus area.
- Diversity and inclusion: We aim to have participants from a variety of disciplines and career stages present to achieve the widest possible perspective on the topic.
The workshop organizers will handle the selection of applicants. To prevent any conflicts of interest, organizers will not evaluate applications from their own home university.
Funding
What’s included:
All participants receive lunch and coffee + snacks on the day of the workshop.
Travel and accommodation:
Applicants are expected to cover their own accommodation and travel expenses.
Additional funding opportunities:
Funding options for participants’ travel and accommodation may be available through their own institutions, either within the context of the ENGAGE.EU Alliance or through other opportunities (e.g., departmental grants).
