Are you a postdoc, junior faculty member or advanced PhD researcher prepared to sharpen your leadership skills for academia?
Our half-day workshop first exposes the complexities of academic leadership. The 360-degree perspective describes the situation of an academic leader in early career stages in relation to all the adjacent roles in the hierarchy: above, below, and beside, such as (a) university and faculty administration, (b) supervisors, (c) students and those being managed, (d) peers, (e) the broader academic community, and (f) the public.
We then cover key skills of academic leadership: setting and evaluating priorities, setting boundaries and maintaining efficiencies, how and why to politely and firmly protect time and resources, and mental shifts to grow as a leader. Finally, we discuss concrete tools for communicating with and guiding others while keeping ourselves motivated, too.
During the workshop, you will:
- Gain heightened awareness of the finesse that academic leadership encompasses
- Develop new competencies in self-management and leadership
- reflect on and set key priorities for yourself
- create a road map or personal plan for accomplishing your priorities
- discover new leadership skills
- meet other early career scholars across Europe and have some fun together!
