Philippe Gout is specialized in public international law. He completed his PhD in 2019 (summa cum laude) at Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas University on the subject of the Treatment of Sudan's sub-state customary legal orders by international peacebuilding law. He is experienced in field research. He has taught at Paris 1 and Paris 2 Universities, Paris Nanterre University, Le Mans University, Inalco and at Toulouse Capitole University, where he was tenured in 2022 as Associate Professor. He has served as an expert witness for the International Criminal Court, and is currently a UNHCR-appointed assessor judge for the French National Asylum Court. He publishes on general public international law, international refugee law, international litigation law, legal philosophy, cultural heritage law and digital law. He is currently co-director of the CALUMET research program (“Smart Contract and the Valuation of Cultural Heritage”). The CALUMET research program, in collaboration with the Toulouse Museum, is experimenting with the use of blockchain in restitution of cultural assets seized during the colonial period.
