Obtaining Data Access - Recommendations from a Researcher & Company Perspective!

In March and April, Toulouse School of Management's Doctoral Programme held two sessions with key speakers on obtaining data access.

The twist? One was from the researcher side, and the other from the company perspective!

The first talk was held by Dr. Fariba Darabi, who discussed the differences in gaining access from single and/or multiple organisations as a researcher, alongside the subject of trust in research participants.

The second was held by Guillaume Tastet, CEO of OpenDecide. Guillaume shared both the challenges and benefits of companies sharing data with researchers, alongside best practice recommendations and advice.

The verdict? Both speakers agreed on certain best practice recommendations, including:

- Don't underestimate the importance of building trust (cognitive access) with companies and participants in order to obtain truly valid and reliable data. This takes time, effort, and resources, but will be worth it in the end!

- Discuss the organisational benefits that the company / participant will receieve as a result of working with you! Show the company / participant how and where your reseach can add value to their work.

- Be clear about what is expected from participants, and establish your credibility! Focus on both the reputation of your University and your own experience and expertise.

- The researcher and business worlds are from 'different planets'! Make sure you adapt your style of speaking (no jargon), and approach (professional - hint : use eye-catching slides!)

- Use and develop your existing network, both personal and LinkedIn.

- Take care to understand the differences in timings also - research output takes more time than business decisions, so ensure your company / participant is aware that your work may take longer in order to assure rigor and quality.

- Be equally aware of allowing sufficient time for participant availability!

These were highly interactive sessions, and incredibly useful for PhD candidates seeking to obtain data in the most efficient way.
