The Research Center Luiss Data Lab at Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome is an excellence center focusing on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of new technologies, traditional media, and digital media, with a particular emphasis on the phenomenon of disinformation. The Center studies the impact of Digitization and Data on the economy and society, the knowledge economy, the information society with the most advanced methods of Statistics and Computer Science.
The Data Lab explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Communication, aiming to critically examine debates surrounding new technologies and their global impact, with a special focus on disinformation and human-computer interaction. The center conducts research, analysis, and monitoring on disinformation and misinformation in the fields of Big Data, new technologies, and generative AI, adopting a multidisciplinary, quantitative and qualitative, comparative perspective. The focus includes case studies in politics, economics, and social narratives, incorporating ad hoc storytelling and videography.
The Data Lab leads several projects, including the Italian Observatory on Digital Media (IDMO), collaborating with national and international partners such as Rai (main italian television), Tim, NewsGuard, Pagella Politica, T6 Ecosystems, Gedi Editorial Group with la Repubblica, and the University of Tor Vergata. The center engages in network and semantic analysis of disinformation in fact-checking digital media, collaborates with the Luiss Journalism Master's program, and contributes by providing analysis and technological tools to support quality journalism. The Data Lab conducts research activities, fact-checking, and promotes critical media literacy, organizing scientific events, Media Literacy programs, webinars, seminars, and informative events featuring high-profile international and national speakers, including academics, media, and political figures.
Collaborating with partners such as Harvard University, Ca' Foscari University, Michigan University, IDMO&EDMO, Google, Meta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IPSOS, the European Union, diplomatic entities, NGOs, and other organizations, the Data Lab aims to develop innovative strategies to combat disinformation and promote critical media literacy. Through dissemination activities and the contribution of strategic partners like Rai, the Data Lab has achieved half a billion views within the scope of IDMO through the production of a series of anti-disinformation video clips.
