Since January 2019, I am Dean of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences, Tilburg University. The school encompasses around 330 staff members and hosts 5 bachelor programs (including a University College) and 7 master programs, as well as a graduate school, and has an annual budget of around 33 MEuro. In my school, I advocate an open and inviting working attitude and stimulate people to grow; I strongly believe in teams; there is room for everyone, irrespective of background, religion or orientation. Transparency, integrity and safety at the workplace are very important to me. As part of my appointment as Dean, I function in quite a number of roles at university-level, among others, as academic lead of the Digital Sciences for Society program, as Steering Group member for Recognition & Rewards, and as local chairperson of the European University Alliance Engage.EU.

Next to the above role, I also serve as chairperson of the national research and innovation program on big data and its applications (Commit2Data) since 2016.

I am an experienced scientist in the field of the design and application of all sorts of computer and communication systems, having worked in leadership roles in the Netherlands (at the University of Twente and the Embedded Systems Institute) and Germany (at the RWTH Aachen), and in a large number of international (European) as well as nationally funded research and innovation projects. Technical fields I have worked in include wireless and wearable communication systems, internet-based systems, smart industry, smart grids and battery models, energy-efficient data centers and cyber-security of industrial systems. Data science and digitization do not hold secrets for me. The applications I prefer to work at relate to the great societal challenges we are facing, such as, sustainability, mobility, and safety & security. I published around 250 scientific papers in journals and at conferences, and held leadership roles in many international conferences. I have advised numerous students towards their MSc, as well as 30+ doctoral students towards their PhD.

Previously, I have been director of an independent public-private open innovation institute on Embedded Systems Engineering (2009-2013; now part of the RTO TNO), head of the department of computer science at the University of Twente (2008-2009 and 2017-2018).

Finally, I find inspiration in art, music, modern architecture, literature, mountain- and gravel-biking and "the great outdoors".
